Brazil's a giant country, so pack for anything – especially if you plan to travel from north to south. Temperatures can vary wildly depending on where you go. Rio, however, is pretty much a beach bum's dream year-round. Temperatures range from 25°C in July to 32°C in February. The sea is a bit cooler in winter (from June to October, it's around 22°C, which, in all honesty, is still perfectly fine). The (hot) wet season is from December to April, so you'd better visit between May and November, when the air is drier and the temperatures are pleasantly warm. That being said, Rio is a year-round destination, as there are no periods that are strictly prohibitive. If you're venturing north or visiting Salvadore de Bahia, the Amazon rainforest or the Pantanal wetlands, it's best to factor in their unique climate when choosing your travel dates.
No need to worry about where to begin! Our tours are designed as a loop, so you can jump in wherever you are. The navigation system and audio-guide will automatically adjust to your location. However, if you happen to be nearby, we do have a preferred starting point: Praça XV - Tram stop Praça XV, Line 2
Garagem do Carmo / R. do Carmo no.55 If for some reason you come to Rio by car, the best thing to do is leave it in a car park. Driving in Brazil is perfectly doable (but you need to be cautious and avoid driving at night) and will allow you to further discover certain regions at your own pace. Driving in the city, on the other hand, is a whole different story. Traffic jams are very common, stretching for miles. Plus, foreign or rental car plates might be an issue. So avoid parking on the street and opt for secure covered parking lots. Remember, most places don't take credit cards.
The subway's your best bet. It's clean, air-conditioned and easy-to-use, and it will get you everywhere. As soon as you arrive, get yourself a rechargeable magnetic Riocard, accepted on all public transport (tramway, metro, waterbus, ferry, etc.). You can top it up online or at Riocard offices. Find out more on the Rio metro website and their phone app, which will help you find your way around. You can also use Bike Rio, the city's affordable bike-sharing system. Rent one of their bright orange bikes and off to explore. They are hard to miss, with over 260 stations across the city. You just need to create an account on the official website. But let's be honest, Rio's best explored on foot to soak up those epic bay views and beach vibes! Tourist areas are generally safe, yet very crowded. We recommend that you take this tour on weekdays and during the day, as on weekends and public holidays some areas are deserted and less appealing.
