The Jerusalem Synagogue, or Jubilee Synagogue

The Prague audio-guided tour invites you to quiet contemplation before the Jerusalem Synagogue, also called the Jubilee Synagogue. Located outside the limits of the former ghetto, it is the only Jewish place of worship still in use in Prague, and the largest synagogue of the Jewish city.

A flamboyant building of 1906

Built in 1906, the Jerusalem Synagogue is distinguished by its flamboyant style, blending Moorish influences and Art Nouveau. Its colourful façade, adorned with oriental motifs and large arches, does not go unnoticed despite its location in a narrow street. Erected to replace several synagogues destroyed during the redevelopment of the Jewish quarter, it testifies to the vitality of the community at the beginning of the twentieth century.

What there is to see

The façade, one of the most colourful and original of Prague, alone is worth the detour. Inside, the decor combines Moorish arches, bright colours and stained glass in great elegance. Still a place of worship, the synagogue also hosts exhibitions on the history of the Jews of Prague. It is a stop to be discovered with respect, a little away from the great monuments of the Josefov quarter.

The Jerusalem Synagogue is in the New Town of Prague, outside the former Jewish quarter. An active place of worship, it is visited with respect for contemplation; access follows its own schedule, whose opening times may vary with the season and the holidays. Appropriate dress is appreciated.
