The Municipal House, Art Nouveau splendour

On the site of the royal court

The Municipal House rises where a former imperial palace stood, occupied for a century by the sovereigns of Bohemia, and of which only the neighbouring Powder Tower remains today. Built at the beginning of the twentieth century, in the midst of the era of Czech national revival, it expresses all the artistic exuberance of those years, blending architecture, painting and sculpture in a single creative impulse.

What there is to see

The façade, adorned with mosaics, ironwork and sculptures, is dazzling. Inside, the sumptuous Smetana Hall, dedicated to concerts, and the salons decorated by the greatest Czech artists, including Alfons Mucha, make it a peak of Art Nouveau. The Municipal House hosts concerts, exhibitions and events, and can also be visited on guided tours.

Practical information

The Municipal House is on Republic Square, next to the Powder Tower, in the heart of Prague. The façade can be contemplated freely from the square; the concerts, exhibitions and guided tours of the interior follow their own schedule, with a charge, whose opening times may vary.
