Viewpoint on Wenceslas Square

What Oxford Street is to London, Wenceslas Square is to Prague. In other words, this place has it all, with its grand and elegant boulevard lined with boutiques and historic landmarks. I think it’s the perfect time for a souvenir photo! And how could you not want one with this beautiful view? On both sides, palaces and valuable buildings align each other perfectly behind rows of linden trees of deep historical significance. These trees represent the many changes undergone by Wenceslas Square to mainain the city’s reputation as a great European capital. Back in the 14th century, this area was nothing more than a horse market, gathering merchants, livestock, and agricultural products. As you’ve guessed, the place was noisy and smelly. A rather ugly image, so there were many attempts to change this. Statues were placed, gas lanterns were installed, theaters were built, plane trees were planted, though later replaced by linden trees. They tried everything... In 1348, Wenceslas Square was finally completed and came out almost unrecognisable. This great decision allowed Prague to secure its well-deserving place among Europe’s greatest capitals. Get your camera ready, because the endless avenue, spreading towards the statue of King Wenceslas in front of the National Museum, offers an iconic shot of Prague. Ready, set, go! Once you’re done, take a moment to also step inside the Koruna Palace, just nearby. Its golden letters sparkling on its façade, this building is now a historic shopping arcade, though it once used to serve for Turkish baths. Inside, look up—you’ll find a magnificent glass dome from 1911. The light in here is gorgeous!
