Thriving in the Middle Ages and flourishing along the busy trade routes of the Baltic Sea, Tallinn’s Lower Town has remained remarkably unchanged since the 15th century. Its extraordinary preservation is part skill, part luck, and a touch of miracle. During the Second World War, only 11% of the Old Town was damaged by bombing. This means we can still enjoy this beautifully preserved setting today, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Tucked behind its caramel-coloured ramparts lies a maze of cobbled streets, once home to the city’s wealthy merchant class. Today, those historic homes have been transformed into cosy cafés and restaurants. Step through an archway, wander across a small courtyard, or stroll past those pastel-coloured façades, and you'll find yourself in the heart of the city, surrounded by some of its finest historic buildings, which seem untouched by time. In case you’re wondering, this charm works just as well by night as it does by day!
