One of Montpellier’s most surprising stories is the one behind the Rockstore — and if you’re here around Halloween, you’ll especially love this spooky little slice of history. So what is the Rockstore? Today, it’s Montpellier’s main concert venue, a lively spot that hosts music lovers all year round. But the building dates back to the 13th century, originally constructed on the site of a former Franciscan monastery and a large Catholic church. It later became a Protestant temple during the religious wars, and eventually, a concert hall. But here’s the twist: beneath the floor of the Rockstore lies an old crypt that once served as a tomb for monks. And that’s not all — in 1785, Charles Bonaparte, father of Napoleon I, came to Montpellier seeking treatment for a severe stomach illness. He died shortly after his arrival and was buried in this very crypt. His remains were later transferred to Saint-Leu-la-Forêt, and finally to the imperial chapel in Ajaccio. So yes — you’re quite literally dancing above a former cemetery. If that doesn’t give you chills, here’s another eerie tidbit: just across from the Lunaret Zoo lies Montmaur Woods, a popular spot for joggers today — but in the Middle Ages, it had a very different reputation. Locals whispered about witches gathering there, using plants from the woods to brew potions and cast spells. A little bit of folklore to keep in mind while exploring Montpellier’s more mysterious corners!
