Place des Bancs

You’ve now arrived at Place des Bancs, one of the city’s historic squares with roots that stretch all the way back to Roman times. A market was already held here back then, but it was in the 13th century that the square truly came to life as a major commercial center. This is where both local vendors and travelling merchants would set up their stalls, laying out their goods on raised stone platforms known as “bancs”, which is how the square got its name. Originally focused on selling meat, the market later shifted to fruits and vegetables. These days, the square occasionally hosts local markets and events, keeping that spirit of exchange alive. Although the medieval look has long since vanished, as most of the surrounding buildings were rebuilt in the 19th century, Place des Bancs remains a lively and inviting place, lined with cafés, restaurants, and shops that make it a favorite gathering spot in the heart of the old town.
