The little Place du Puits-Neuf is one of the most charming corners of old Saumur. Tucked between Rue du Puits-Neuf and Rue de la Tonnelle, this cobbled square feels like a small village hidden in the heart of the city. At its center stands a modest but much-loved fountain—once a simple water source, now a familiar symbol of Saumur’s old town. In earlier times, it was fed by springs from the nearby hillsides, supplying water to residents and offering refreshment to passing horses. Around it, the half-timbered houses and the two broad lime trees that shade the square bring to life the gentle atmosphere of the old Saint-Jean district, once busy with craftsmen and small shops. Even today, Place du Puits-Neuf remains a quiet refuge, a place to pause and listen to the soft murmur of water that has flowed here for centuries, echoing the calm spirit of Saumur itself.
