Heller Haus

With or without us, there’s a good chance you would have stopped in front of this eye-catching building anyway. It’s not the sort of place you see every day. Soft pastel walls, elegant mansard roofs, delicate stucco framing the windows — the Heller Haus looks like it’s been lifted straight out of a fairy tale. But the fantasy ends there, because in reality, this was a bourgeois townhouse, and its owner was no princess. Sorry to disappoint. Built in the mid-18th century, it was the birthplace of Joseph Heller — a Bamberg businessman, historian, and art researcher. His vast and valuable collection, including manuscripts, drawings, and old engravings, is now preserved in the Bamberg State Library, exactly as he wished when he left it to the city in his will. In a town where the architecture often feels heavy and imposing, the Heller Haus is a refreshing change — and it also happens to make a perfect backdrop for a souvenir photo.
