Karlsplatz

You’re now standing in Karlsplatz—one of Munich’s most famous and lively squares. It was built in the 18th century, after the city’s defensive walls were torn down. That’s why you can still see one of the original city gates nearby—Karlstor, which marked one of the entrances to Munich’s historic centre. It’s one of the only three surviving gates, distinct of 14th-century medieval architecture. Karlsplatz is constantly full of energy, filled with both locals and visitors. Historic shops and neo-Gothic façades line the square, adding to its charm. The square was named in honour of Karl Theodor, an 18th-century Elector of Bavaria, but locals call it Stachus, after a pub that once stood here. The large fountain in the centre was added in 1970. In summer, it offers a refreshing mist to cool off on hot days. In winter, the square is transformed into an ice rink, making Karlsplatz a favourite gathering spot all year round!
