The Monaco audio-guided tour has you discover Fort Antoine, a former military zone recognisable by its watchtower and its loopholes. Built at the beginning of the eighteenth century to strengthen the defence of the City-State, it has today become an open-air theatre.

From fortress to open-air stage

Monaco was several times the target of attacks, notably from Genoa, the neighbouring Italian city, which justified the construction of this defensive work. During the Second World War, between 1939 and 1945, the fort was destroyed. But its absence did not last: in 1953, Prince Rainier III had it rebuilt, and it has since hosted open-air performances in a setting steeped in history.

What there is to see

Fort Antoine charms with its military architecture and its location, facing the sea, on the heights of the Rock. Its stone tiers, arranged in the former fortification, make it a unique open-air theatre, where shows and performances are held, especially in summer. Even outside the evenings, the site offers a fine view and a peaceful atmosphere, a witness to the defensive past of Monaco.
