Although the Red Light District is one of Amsterdam’s most notorious areas, we’ve chosen not to take you there to ensure a family-friendly experience. However, if you’re curious, feel free to explore this old neighborhood, home to 14th-century buildings where prostitution is legal and deeply intertwined with the city's long-standing tradition of tolerance. At night, the district transforms into the liveliest part of town with its red neon lights, whereas during the day, you can visit several museums there. For a breath of fresh air, don’t miss out on Vondelpark, a large urban park and National Monument since 1996. Spanning 45 hectares of vegetation, it features an open-air theater, numerous bars and restaurants, skate and roller tracks, and vast lawns, perfect for a family picnic or a relaxing moment with friends. Amsterdam boasts the highest number of museums per square kilometer in Europe, so chances are you’ll most definitely come across one during your walk! If you really want to explore them, head to Museumplein, where most of the city’s major museums are clustered together. For those looking to explore beyond the capital, several charming villages nearby are worth a visit. Zaanse Schans is the most touristic one, offering a glimpse of traditional Dutch life with its museums, windmills, and historic houses along the canal. For a less crowded but equally picturesque experience, check out Marken, or visit Volendam, known for its lovely town center and small beach. If you have more time, Utrecht and Alkmaar are also great options for a day trip. And of course, what would a visit to the Netherlands be without tulips? To see breathtaking flower fields, head to the Keukenhof Gardens, located about 50 minutes away by car from Amsterdam. As one of the world’s largest flower gardens, it showcases over 800 varieties of tulips and offers visitors the chance to wander through spectacular colorful landscapes. With all these options, you’ll have plenty to explore if you decide to extend your stay in the region!
