Cast your eyes to the left: on the wall of the Palacio de Congresos you’ll spot a large azulejo mosaic dedicated to the Viajeros Románticos—the Romantic Travellers, the foreign writers, artists and explorers who, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, helped forge Ronda’s romantic image. Installed in 2013, the piece shows an aerial view of the city surrounded by quotations from celebrated visitors such as Washington Irving, Richard Ford, Lady Tenison and the Marquis de Custine, all mesmerised by the dramatic Tajo landscape, the Andalusian exoticism and the authentic atmosphere of the Serranía. This Romantic movement, fuelled by local banditry, Moorish heritage and Ronda’s once-remote setting, played a decisive role in the rise of tourism here and in spreading the city’s image across Europe and beyond.
