The Bangkok National Gallery
The National Gallery of Bangkok
An artistic stop on the Bangkok audio-guided tour, the National Gallery hides behind a pastel yellow facade lined with palm trees. This building, listed as a historic monument, is one of the high places of artistic creation in Thailand.
From the royal mint to the museum
The building once housed the royal mint, before being turned into a museum in 1977 by the Department of Fine Arts. On two levels, the rooms display precious antiquities, works by major twentieth-century artists and an entire section dedicated to the royal family, with objects that belonged to Kings Rama VI and Rama IX.
What to see
The gallery has become the essential address for discovering ancient, modern and contemporary Thai art. A place of exchange and cultural life, in spring it organises art markets combining exhibitions and sales of local creations. Between tradition and modernity, it offers a unique panorama of the country's artistic richness.
