Wat Mahan

A contemplative stop on the Bangkok audio-guided tour, Wat Mahan deserves a special pause among the city's many temples. Its construction began in 1850 under the reign of King Rama III, and it was thanks to the funds of his successor Rama IV that the sanctuary was completed.

The first temple-school

Wat Mahan is not limited to its religious role. In 1884, it became the very first temple to host a public school, marking an important step in the democratisation of education in Thailand. At that time, Buddhist monasteries were encouraged to open their doors to educate the people, and Wat Mahan was a pioneer.

Its name, which means the great dwelling of water, reflects the symbolic and spiritual importance of the aquatic element in Thai culture.
