Just a quick pause during your tour to introduce you to a few other points of interest that couldn't be included in the itinerary. If you have a few more hours to spend in Washington, I recommend the charming Georgetown neighbourhood. Northwest of the National Mall, along the Potomac River, it’s a delightful area, full of picturesque streets to walk through. If you cross the river, you’ll reach Arlington National Cemetery, a renowned place of remembrance in Washington. Here lie thousands of American soldiers and some of the most notable figures in the nation’s history. At the far end of the cemetery, on the edge of the capital, you’ll find the Pentagon. It is the headquarters of the Department of Defense and the largest office building in the world. Tours are only available to U.S. citizens, but non-Americans can still walk around the area to catch a glimpse of it. If you’re a foodie, you must visit the Union Market. It’s one of Washington’s trendiest spots, with over 40 vendors offering all kinds of international food. If you have a spare day left to explore the surroundings, check out the colonial town of Alexandria. You’ll discover some distinct architecture and pleasant streets lined with shops. Continuing further south into Virginia, you’ll reach Mount Vernon, George Washington’s former estate. There, you’ll find his tomb alongside that of his wife, Martha, a beautiful garden designed by the president himself, and about twenty rooms that have been restored to their original appearance. For a nature getaway, head to Great Falls Park, a national park on the outskirts of Washington D.C. You can go hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, horseback riding, or even rock climbing. The park also has incredible waterfalls. If you’re thinking about visiting Maryland, you could tour around Annapolis, a maritime town with lovely cobbled streets and souvenir shops, perfect for a day out. You could also visit Baltimore, a port city with historic neighbourhoods and old houses that take you into the past. Finally, further north in Pennsylvania, you can discover the infamous town of Gettysburg. This is where one of the deadliest battles of the Civil War took place. Gettysburg is an important chapter of American history, but also a beautiful small town with picturesque landscapes. Well, now you have plenty reasons to stay around for a little longer.
