Christ Church Cathedral

Christ Church Cathedral, the Anglican mother church

The Montreal audio-guided tour leads you before Christ Church Cathedral, dedicated to Christ and approached with quiet respect. It is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Montreal, in the heart of downtown, on Sainte-Catherine Street.

Anglicanism in Canada

Anglicanism sees itself as both Catholic and Reformed. Born in the sixteenth century from a disagreement between King Henry VIII of England and the pope, when the sovereign freed the Church of England from Rome, the word Anglican indeed means, in Latin, of English origin. This denomination is mainly present in English-speaking culture. Christ Church Cathedral is one of its high places in Montreal.

What there is to see

The cathedral stands out for its neo-Gothic architecture and its slender spire, which contrasts with the surrounding skyscrapers. With respect for silence, you appreciate the serenity of the nave and the light of the stained glass. Connected to the city's underground network, it is a precious witness to the English-speaking religious history of Montreal.
