Rue Sainte-Catherine, Montreal's shopping artery
The Montreal audio-guided tour takes you onto Rue Sainte-Catherine, the most important shopping street in the city. It represents the largest concentration of fashion and clothing shops in the country.
Eleven kilometres of shops and life
With its eleven kilometres and its some twelve hundred shops, Rue Sainte-Catherine is the ideal place to go shopping, as they say in Quebec. Towards the east, it comes alive with bars, theatres and restaurants, before becoming the main street of the Village, the gay district of Montreal, where the rainbow flag flies permanently. It is one of the liveliest arteries in the city.
What there is to see
Rue Sainte-Catherine concentrates department stores, fashion shops, cafés and terraces, but also many theatres and performance halls. Part of it becomes pedestrian in summer, in the heart of the Village and the Quartier des spectacles. It is the artery par excellence for feeling the pulse of Montreal life, by day and by night.
Practical information
Rue Sainte-Catherine crosses the centre of Montreal from east to west, over about eleven kilometres. It can be walked freely at all hours and on the level; some sections become pedestrian in summer. The shops, bars and theatres keep their own hours.
