Market Square

Market Square is one of the most vibrant spots in Helsinki—famous for its lively atmosphere and the Helsinki Market. Originally located on Senate Square, the market was moved here when the city’s main square was redesigned. Nestled between the harbour and City Hall, it’s the perfect place to explore local produce and regional specialties. At the heart of the square stands a striking obelisk—the first public monument erected in Helsinki. It was placed here in 1835 and is known as the “Stone of the Tsarina.” It commemorates the first visit of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, wife of Tsar Nicholas I, who set foot in Helsinki at this very spot in 1833. The monument is made of red granite, topped with a bronze globe and the two-headed eagle of Imperial Russia—symbols of the empire’s influence over Finland at the time. In 2000, to celebrate Helsinki’s 450th anniversary, the obelisk was restored, with the globe and eagle regilded to shine once again.
