Welcome to the 2nd of February Square – a beautiful public square in the heart of Colmar. At its center, you'll find the so-called Green Mountain Square, a small garden built on the grounds of a former hospital. But why February 2nd? Well, it's one of the most important dates in the city's history. The square's name commemorates the liberation of Colmar from German occupation, during World War II. On February 2, 1945, after a fierce three-week battle, the French and American forces pushed back the German army. The harsh weather conditions and the countless lives lost, including those wounded and missing during this battle, have made this day an important chapter in Colmar's history. So, now you know the story behind the name of this square.
