The Adam House

The Angers audio-guided tour leads you to Place Sainte-Croix, before the Adam House, undoubtedly the most famous in the city. It is one of the finest timber-framed houses in Angers, inherited from the 15th century.

The House of the Tree of Life

The house owes its name to the sculptures of Adam and Eve that once adorned the corner post, around the tree of life, on the ground floor. These figures were destroyed in the 18th century, during the Revolution, but the tree of life survives on the large post supporting the corner tower. The house, also called the house of Adam and Eve, illustrates the richness of late medieval timber-framed architecture.

What there is to see

The facade of the Adam House abounds in wooden sculptures: figures, animals and lively scenes adorn the posts and the half-timbering. It is a true medieval picture book, a stone's throw from Saint-Maurice Cathedral. The house today hosts the House of Craftsmen, dedicated to Angevin art crafts.
