Just steps from the city, the Garonne Canal invites you to wander beneath its tall plane trees, whether by bike, on foot, or even by boat. A peaceful ribbon cutting through the countryside, it links up with lovely villages along the way. For a dose of adrenaline, head to Walygator Park, only ten minutes away. Roller coasters, water rides, and shows promise fun for young and old alike. Higher up on the hills, Puymirol, the first bastide of the Agenais, reveals its medieval lanes and breathtaking views over the valley. Beauville, with its large square and stone houses, also preserves the timeless charm of hilltop villages. If you enjoy stepping even further back in time, the Gallo-Roman site of Castelculier unveils the remains of an amphitheater and baths, proof of a prosperous era long ago. Clermont-Dessous, a former fortified village, overlooks the Garonne Valley and offers one of the most beautiful panoramas in the area. A little further on, Moissac awaits with its abbey and above all its cloister, considered one of the finest in Europe. On the castle side, Madaillan impresses with its nearly intact medieval silhouette, while Bonaguil, a spectacular 15th-century fortress, looks as if it has stepped straight out of a knight’s tale. To soak up the lively atmosphere of the bastides, head to Villeneuve-sur-Lot, with its grid layout, half-timbered houses, and colorful market. Just a few kilometers away, Monflanquin is listed among the most beautiful villages of France: a medieval jewel with a splendid arcaded square. Further south, Nérac recalls the glorious days of Henri IV. Its Renaissance château, narrow streets, and the banks of the Baïse tell the story of the Albret dynasty. And for a big breath of fresh air, the Pays de Serres and the Lot Valley roll out hills, orchards, and vineyards as far as the eye can see, perfect for hiking or sampling local flavors.
