Let’s take a quick break to introduce you to some other points of interest that couldn’t be included in the itinerary. Among the major highlights of Compiègne is the famous Armistice Clearing. This area in the heart of the forest became a symbol of peace on November 11, 1918, when the armistice was signed, marking the end of the Great War. During the German occupation of France in 1940, Hitler had the memorial site destroyed and the famous train carriage, where the armistice was signed, set on fire. If you visit this historic site, you’ll find a memorial with an interactive trail that takes you from World War I to World War II. You’ll also see a recreation of the carriage, as well as a monumental sculpture by artist Clara Halter, representing a ring engraved with the word "peace" in 52 languages. The Compiègne Forest is also worth exploring. It’s perfect for nature walks, especially the trail up Beaux Monts Hill, where you’ll find sweeping views over the countryside. A few kilometers from Compiègne, the small town of Longueil-Annel, situated along the canal, tells the story of river navigation. With its house-museum dedicated to the life of boatmen, a barge transformed into a museum, and hybrid boat cruises, the boatmen’s city offers a charming waterside stroll. You can also head to Pierrefonds, where you’ll find a small lake and a magnificent 14th-century castle, entirely redesigned by Viollet-le-Duc at the request of Napoleon III to show what a medieval fortress would have looked like. For history buffs and miniature soldier fans, don’t miss the excellent Museum of Miniature Figurines. The historical reconstructions are top-notch, and the entry fee is very little. So, with all of this, you’ll have plenty to explore if you decide to spend a little extra time in the region!
