Let’s take a short pause in our visit to highlight a few other places of interest that aren’t included in this itinerary but are well worth knowing about. For art lovers, the must-see is Orléans’ FRAC — the Regional Contemporary Art Fund — housed in a strikingly futuristic building. Its contemporary collection is impressive, and best of all, admission is free! If you’re in the mood for greenery, the city offers 18 parks and gardens. Don’t miss the Botanical Garden, and especially the famous Floral Park of La Source — a peaceful, enchanting spot in the southern part of the city. Orléans is also best discovered at the rhythm of the Loire. There’s nothing quite like gliding along the river to appreciate its rich flora and fauna. If you’re feeling active, try canoeing, kayaking, or stand-up paddleboarding. For something more relaxing, why not opt for a river cruise aboard a traditional boat? You can also explore the riverbanks by bike along the Loire à Vélo route — a 900-kilometer cycling trail that follows the Loire from one charming stop to the next. Just a short distance from the city, Charlemagne Island offers a 70-hectare recreational area around a lake — a perfect summer destination for families. From June to September, you can swim, windsurf, sail a catamaran, or just enjoy the outdoors. If you’re looking to dive even deeper into nature, the Orléans Forest is just the place. It’s the largest state-owned forest in France and a designated Natura 2000 site. With 1,200 kilometers of trails, it’s home to deer, wild boars, hares, and no fewer than 180 bird species — including the rare osprey. You can explore on foot, by bike, or even on horseback. For stunning panoramic views, head to the Caillettes viewpoint or the Ravoir observatory. On a more historical note, the forest also sheltered many during times of conflict — including resistance fighters in World War II, honored at the Resistance Crossroads in Lorris. Finally, no visit to the region would be complete without mentioning the Loire Valley châteaux. Scattered throughout the valley, the most iconic lie between Orléans and Tours — think Chambord, Chenonceau, Cheverny, Amboise, and Clos Lucé. You’re truly spoiled for choice.
