We'd like to take a moment to briefly introduce you to other points of interest that we weren't able to squeeze into our itinerary. Pau is a city steeped in history, as you will have noticed during your visit. If you want to see more, take a trip to the medieval town of Lescar, which, as well as being of undeniable cultural interest, offers breathtaking views over the Pyrenees and the Pic du Midi d'Ossau. But Pau is also a city that's all about nature. Starting with the timeless Bastard forest, which offers a multitude of ways to spend the day in greenery. Just 15/20 minutes from the city centre, you'll also find the charming Lac d'Aressy to the east and Lac de Laroin to the west. And if you fancy a real breath of fresh air, in high mountain landscapes, no worries, you can reach the magnificent Ossau valley in the Atlantic Pyrenees, less than an hour's drive from Pau. There are plenty of great walks to choose from. One of the great classics that can make you feel like you've landed in a postcard, is the loop around Ayous lakes. Leave early so that you can park in the upper car park. This splendid 16 km hike will take you around 4 mountain lakes, in a breathtaking setting at an altitude of over 2000 metres. Pau is also a city of high-performance sport. Pau’s Golf, the first to be opened outside the British Isles, is a fascinating dive into the city's cultural and social heritage. The town also played host to the first motor races, and today you can take to the track and drive some of the finest cars of the Pau International Grand Prix! If you're interested in white-water sports, you can go kayaking without risk on the incredible Aquasports artificial site. And if you're a keen equestrian, the Pau-Gelos National Stud is the place to be. If you prefer good wine to sport, a stroll along the Jurançon hillsides is an absolute must! Also note that Pau is located on the Jurançon wine route. The vineyards of Béarn produce a white wine with a protected designation of origin, which has graced the tables of France since Henry IV. Feel free to visit the cellars and taste the two main white wines, one is the other one is sweet, made from the small and large Manseng grape variety. Well, with all this, you've got plenty of things to do if you feel like staying in the area for a while.
