The Angers audio-guided tour begins before the emblem of the city: its immense medieval castle. Standing on a rocky spur inhabited since the Neolithic, it unfolds its seventeen towers and its enclosure of nearly a kilometre, dominating the Maine and the historic centre.

The castle of the Dukes of Anjou

The site was occupied from Antiquity by the Romans, but it was in the 13th century that the present fortress rose, on the highest point of the town, a strategic position to watch over the surroundings. Residence of the counts and then the Dukes of Anjou, including the famous Good King Rene, the castle bears witness to the power of Anjou in the Middle Ages. Its towers of schist and tufa, alternating dark and light bands, give it a unique silhouette.

What there is to see

The castle houses its most precious treasure: the Apocalypse Tapestry, an immense 14th-century tapestry, the largest preserved in the world, which unfolds over dozens of metres the visions of the Apocalypse of Saint John. You also walk the ramparts, the wall-walk, the ducal residence, the chapel and the hanging gardens, with fine views over the city and the river.
