Brigittines street

Here, it's time for a creepy anecdote. This little medieval-looking cul-de-sac is an old passageway leading to the Brigittine Convent, built in 1604. It has been the scene for some gruesome and frankly bizarre events. It all began in 1608, when the nuns complained about hearing loud noises of screams and wailing voices at night. During Pentecost in 1612, the nuns began contorting themselves and dancing on the altar as if possessed, they even trampled their Mother Superior. The best exorcists were called in and declared that the women were possessed by the devil. One of them, Marie de Sains, confessed that she had made a pact with the devil and described sabbaths and orgies. Now, of course, all confessions were made under torture during the witch hunts, so they are really just a reflection of what the judges wanted to hear. Fact remains that she was not executed, but thrown into prison, where she spend for the rest of her life. The convent of the Brigittines no longer exists, but the street that led to it has retained a strange atmosphere and its share of mystery.
