Cambronne Square, a bourgeois promenade

The Nantes audio-guided tour invites you to a break at Cambronne Square, also called Cours Cambronne. This fine garden promenade, lined with buildings with harmonious façades, is an integral part of the great urban development plan intended in the eighteenth century for the Nantes bourgeoisie.

Graslin's project completed by Crucy

The whole was born of the dream of Louis-Joseph Graslin, who wanted a fine public promenade dedicated to the bourgeoisie, opening onto a great theatre. But a convent occupied the land, and the religious did not share his ambitions. Graslin had been dead for a year when the works could finally begin. It was Mathurin Crucy, the architect of the theatre, who took over the project and designed, around a large garden, fine buildings with a unified and harmonious façade.

What there is to see

About one hundred and eighty metres long, the cours links Place Graslin to the Quai de la Fosse. Lined with rows of trees and identical buildings on either side, it offers an elegant and restful perspective. At its centre stands the statue of General Pierre Cambronne, a famous soldier who served Napoleon I and was renowned for his sharp tongue. A haven of classical calm in the heart of the city.

Cambronne Square is between Place Graslin and the Quai de la Fosse, in the heart of Nantes. It is a public space freely accessible and on the level during opening hours. A pleasant green stop along the walk in the Graslin district.

Who designed Cambronne Square?

Conceived by Louis-Joseph Graslin, the project was carried out by the architect Mathurin Crucy, author of the nearby Graslin theatre.
