Cambronne Square

You're inside Cambronne Square. This beautiful garden is an integral part of Graslin's grand urban development plan dedicated to the bourgeoisie. His dream was to create a beautiful public walkway overlooking a large theatre. However, a convent stood on the land he sought to buy, and the monks had no interest in his ambitious plans. Graslin died just a year before it finally became possible to start the works. The project was taken over by Mathurin Crucy, the same architect who designed the theatre. He built beautiful buildings with a single, harmonious facade around a large garden promenade. In the centre stands a statue of Pierre Cambronne, a famous general who greatly helped Napoleon 1st and was renowned for his sharp tongue.
