Carnac City Hall

It’s hard to miss this unusual building, with a roofline that looks almost like a mountain range! This is actually Carnac City Hall, which also houses the municipal police. Built in the 1970s by architect Pierre-Alexis Kobakhidze, it’s a striking example of architecture from that period.

And no, the Bretons weren’t trying to make up for a lack of mountains. Those triangular peaks are meant to reinterpret, in a highly expressive way, the gables and slate roofs of traditional local houses. The architect repeated and exaggerated those familiar shapes, giving City Hall its distinctive sawtooth silhouette.

You may love it or hate it, but it certainly doesn’t leave anyone indifferent.
