The Centenary Monument

A place of remembrance on the Nice audio-guided tour, the Centenary Monument celebrates the centenary of the attachment of Nice to France. At the foot of its pyramid, two women represent the allegories of Nice giving herself to France.

Nice and France

France is here represented wearing a helmet instead of the red cap, the breast covered: calm, she symbolises the wish for a moderate Republic. At the top, a Nike, a Victory, recalls the Greek origin of the name of Nice, Nikaia, she through whom victory comes. The dates of 1860 and 1793 evoke the two attachments of Nice to France.

What to see

Nice had already been attached to France in 1793, before being returned to the House of Savoy in 1814, then definitively annexed in 1860 under Napoleon III. Observe with respect this commemorative monument, a witness to the singular history of the county of Nice.
