The Champ de Mars esplanade, the main square of Valence

Right in the heart of Valence, the Champ de Mars esplanade is the city's main square. Three hectares in size, it is very busy with locals and visitors alike and offers an exceptional panorama over the Jouvet park and the hinterland. The Valence audio-guided tour makes it a natural landmark to begin exploring the centre.

A promenade born in the eighteenth century

Formerly the Promenade de Beauregard, the esplanade dates back to 1770 and has never ceased to be the heart of Valence life. Open to the east onto the Jouvet park and the Rhône, it hosts markets, festivals and the city's great gatherings. Its history runs alongside that of Valence, of which it remains the public stage par excellence.

What to see

Here you admire the Peynet bandstand, emblem of the square, and enjoy the belvedere open over the Jouvet park and the valley. Lined with terraces, the esplanade is ideal for a break before going down to the park or reaching old Valence. It is the best starting point to grasp the city's atmosphere.

It is a public space open at all times, freely accessible and on the level, overlooking the Jouvet park reached by stairs.
