The Porte du Chapitre, a forgotten threshold of the coronation city
With its two turrets and singular look, the Porte du Chapitre stands out from the buildings around it. It once led into the courtyard of the cathedral Chapter, an enclosed domain reserved for the canons. The Reims audio-guided tour passes under this gate to recall the town's organisation around its cathedral, the spiritual heart of the coronation city.
A sixteenth-century gate
Built in the sixteenth century, around 1531, the gate closed off the Chapter courtyard from the outside, where the canons attached to the cathedral met to deal with communal life. The Chapter was abolished at the Revolution, but the gate remains, one of the few vestiges of this complex. In the twentieth century it was even relocated, a sign of the care given to safeguarding Reims heritage.
What to see
The gate stands out by its turrets and decoration, contrasting with the neighbouring façades. Passing through it, you sense the former extent of the cathedral Chapter and measure how much the cathedral structured the city's life. It is a discreet but eloquent stop on the heritage trail, linking religious history to the old town planning of Reims.
