Chateaubriand’s grave

In keeping with his wish to be buried here so that he could, in his own words, “continue his conversation with the sea,” Chateaubriand’s grave lies here, simple and unnamed, bearing only this epitaph: “A great French writer wished to rest here to hear nothing but the sea and the wind.” And for a rather less respectful footnote to the story, Jean-Paul Sartre apparently ignored that final wish entirely. Simone de Beauvoir revealed in her memoirs that Sartre, finding the tomb pompous, urinated on it.
