Church of Saint-Nicolas

This is the Church of Saint-Nicolas, one of the oldest in Saumur. First mentioned in 1145 under the name Saint-Nicolas-des-Rives, it once served the sailors and merchants who lived and worked along the Loire. Its architecture tells the story of many centuries: the nave walls and parts of the choir date back to the 12th century, while the bell tower, which crowns the facade, was rebuilt in 1864 by Saumur’s own architect Charles Joly-Leterme. To protect it from the Loire’s floods, the entire building was raised by about two meters, giving its interior a tall, elegant proportion. Inside, you can recognize the graceful lines of Poitevin Gothic architecture in the pointed arches and the gentle light that fills the nave. The church holds a remarkable collection of furnishings, including an 18th-century high altar, finely carved wooden panels, several paintings, and the bell “Nicolas,” still in use today. Listed as a Historic Monument, Saint-Nicolas Church remains both a place of worship and a welcoming stop for visitors exploring Saumur’s rich history.
