City Hall

This building has also seen its share of turmoil. In 1871, inspired by the Paris Commune, local workers rose up and seized City Hall. For several days, the insurgents turned this symbol of municipal authority into the headquarters for their social demands, an often-overlooked but significant chapter in French history. Today, the square in front has returned to calm. Redesigned in the 20th century, it’s now a lively gathering spot for the people of Saint-Étienne.
