Clock Tower

Look up and admire the stunning Clock Tower. Once a prison, this tower features a clock that was fitted in the 15th century, and commissioned by King Charles VIII so the people of the city could always know the time. This was especially important in a city where trade played a central role, being punctual was crucial! Before the clock was installed, it was the churches' responsibility to ring their bells to mark the time. This clock, however, was far more precise. The tower itself is much older. It was originally part of the Roman fortifications when Auxerre was known as Autessiodurum, and it marked the entrance to the city. Restored and renovated over the centuries, it’s now recognised as a heritage site for both its Roman origins and the 15th-century clock It’s been listed as a historic monument since 1890!
