Colbert Bridge

Hidden behind this metal frame, slightly worn out by time and the salt that floats in the atmosphere, is a Dieppe landmark with a history that is more than endearing. The Colbert Bridge was opened in 1889 and is currently one of the last swing bridges in Europe still in operational. What does " swing " really mean? An entire hydraulic pump mechanism is activated in just 95 seconds to swing the bridge's 800 tonnes and allow boats to leave the docks and enter the port. Affectionately known as the "bridge that swings", the structure is also known as the Eiffel Bridge, because of its contemporary design made from the same materials and using the same construction techniques as the iconic Parisian monument. The bridge was deemed too old and was almost demolished and replaced by a more modern version that cost less to operate. However, that was without counting on the Dieppois' attachment to their heritage, which not only saved it from this sad end, but also enabled it to be listed as a historic monument in 2020. In other words, the story of the Colbert Bridge isn't over; in fact, it's quite the opposite.
