The collegiate church of Saint-Andre
A contemplative stop on the Grenoble audio-guided tour, the collegiate church of Saint-Andre stands at the heart of the delphinal district, the seat of power of the Dauphins in the Middle Ages. Here, the Dauphin is not the eldest son of the king of France, but the title borne by the counts of the Viennois.
The necropolis of the Dauphins
Wanted in 1228 by the Dauphin Andre to serve as a necropolis for his dynasty and to house the chapter of canons founded two years earlier, the church above all asserted his power against the bishop, with whom he co-ruled the city. It was funded thanks to the revenues of the silver mines near Alpe d'Huez, in the difficult context that followed the great flood of 1219.
What to see
A necropolis of the Dauphins, the collegiate church is a place of memory of the delphinal dynasty. Enter this building with quiet and respect for the place of worship, in memory of the counts who rest there, and admire its medieval architecture in the heart of old Grenoble.
