Colmar’s Manneken Pis

Look what's over here on your right! A glimpse of Brussels in the heart of Colmar! It's a replica of the famous Manneken Pis found in the Belgian capital, mounted right here on the façade of the Courthouse. Dating back to 1922, it's the first official copy of the real Manneken-Pis. Others were to follow, in London and even Japan. The one before you was a gift from Adolph Max, Mayor of Brussels, to the city of Colmar in 1922, in recognition of the Franco-Belgian friendship and of the shared hardships the two towns faced during World War I, which had ended 4 years earlier. During World War II, it was kept safe in the storerooms of the Unterlinden Museum. It wasn't damaged and is now back in its rightful place up on the wall of the Courthouse, for all to see.
