Congregation Chapel

This little chapel may not be Carnac’s most spectacular monument, but it tells a very human story about life in the old town. You might not realize it at first, but the chapel stands at the highest point in the historic center. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the name Our Lady of Good Help.

In the past, local residents came here to pray novenas for the dying—nine days of prayer to accompany someone nearing the end of life. So why is it called the Congregation Chapel rather than Our Lady of Good Help? The name comes from another chapter in the town’s history.

In the 19th century, a school opened nearby, and the chapel also became a local meeting place. From then on, it became known as the “Congregation.” The white building you can see just behind it was built a few decades later to house a boys’ school. Many of Carnac’s chapels have this same deeply local character.

They are more than religious buildings: they are landmarks tied to neighborhoods and villages, and to the memories and communities that grew up around them.
