I have to admit that this is a steep climb, but the rewarding views over the Croix Rousse plateau and several other districts awaiting at the top will be worth it. You are here on what is known as les pentes de la Croix Rousse, “the slopes of” in English, the first district of Lyon. Since the 16th century, the people of Lyon have settled on the slopes of this hill formerly known as Saint-Sébastien hill. In fact, the street you are on is called Montée Saint-Sébastien in its memory. Today it is a lively neighborhood, with bars that attract many locals. It has expanded beyond the iconic Place des Terreaux, which was once the center of the city. With beautiful views, original concept shops and bars, all just a few meters from one of the city's busiest squares, the slopes are ideal to go on an explorative stroll of these steep streets that used to lead to Croix Rousse!
