Defeated Athlete Sculpture

On your left, you’ll see The Defeated Athlete, a bronze sculpture by Jean Carton set on the Midou roundabout. Carton shows an athlete bent forward, worn down by effort and marked by defeat. He’s not celebrating victory, but the moment just after, when fatigue takes over and human vulnerability becomes visible. Jean Carton, born in Paris in 1911, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and was influenced by Robert Wlérick, the sculptor from Mont-de-Marsan who passed on his taste for simple, truthful forms. A winner of many awards and a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Carton always aimed to express the inner strength of the body rather than its perfect shape. Created in the 1970s, this piece captures the balance between tension and release, power and fragility. It’s part of Mont-de-Marsan’s sculpture trail, an open-air museum that links the train station to Jean Rameau Park.
