A staircase born of urban growth

In the nineteenth century, Blois experienced urban growth and had to modernise its accesses. The steep relief of the city complicated movement between the upper and lower districts. The municipality then decided to cut new thoroughfares, including the present Rue Denis-Papin, and to lay out this great staircase to cross the difference in level. It bears the name of Denis Papin, a physicist and inventor born in the region of Blois, a pioneer of the steam engine.

What there is to see

The monumental staircase, wide and majestic, offers from its summit a superb perspective over Rue Denis-Papin and the lower town, all the way to the Loire. Its steps are sometimes enhanced by ephemeral and colourful decorations, on the occasion of events. It is one of the most photographed viewpoints of Blois, and an obligatory passage between the two levels of the city.
