Dominican Church

The Dominican Church before you was built in the 13th century on what is now the Place des Martyrs de la Résistance, the Martyrs of the Resistance Square. The Dominicans, a Catholic religious order founded in the early 13th century, arrived in town in 1260 and began building this church a few years later. It was to become a true masterpiece of Gothic art. During the French Revolution, it was converted into an artillery store, and then into a grain exchange in the early 19th century. It wasn't until 1898 that it became a church once again. Today, it houses the largest piece ever painted by local painter Martin Schongauer. It's the Madonna of the Rose Bower, painted in Colmar back in 1473. The cloister regularly hosts musical concerts, particularly during the Colmar International Festival.
