A monastic town

The name Doutre comes from its position beyond the Maine, on the other side of the river. The district formed in the 11th century around the abbey of Notre-Dame de la Charite and developed thanks to its proximity to the water, living from fishing, boating and tanning. More recent than the old town, it welcomed in the 15th and 16th centuries the Angevin nobility, who built there remarkable timber-framed houses and private mansions.

The Doutre preserves fine timber-framed houses, private mansions and peaceful squares, such as Place de la Laiterie. There you also discover the former Saint-Jean hospital and its apothecary, witnesses to the hospital history of the district.
