The peristyle of the Fautras barracks
A stop on the Brest audio-guided tour, these astonishing remains, made up of an arch and four columns, are the remnants of a former naval barracks. It was built in the 1870s, after the Franco-Prussian war.
The barracks of General Fautras
The barracks served to house French troops. Its name referred to General Jean Fautras, a French officer of the nineteenth century. Only a few remains survive today, for it was demolished in the twentieth century, having lost all usefulness. These remains recall the strategic and military importance of Brest, a much-coveted city during conflicts.
What to see
Come closer to the columns to observe them up close, then climb the few steps to discover a fine view of the Capucins workshops. These buildings, recognisable by their distinctive architecture, were built by the Navy in the nineteenth century, in place of the former Capucins convent that had occupied the site since the seventeenth century.
