Fêtes de Bayonne
The Fetes de Bayonne
A festive stop on the Bayonne audio-guided tour, the Fetes de Bayonne, or Baionako Bestak, are the city's most anticipated event and one of the largest in France. They take place each year in the heart of summer.
Born in 1932
The Fetes were created in 1932 by a group of rugby players from the Aviron bayonnais, who drew inspiration from the Fetes of Pamplona, in Spain, to create their own festivities. With more than a million participants each year, they are among the largest events in France. They were once called the Great Summer Festivals.
What to see
For five days, the city turns into a huge festival that brings together locals and visitors, dressed in white and red. Among the symbols: the throwing of the city keys, from the balcony of the town hall, which marks the opening of the festivities since 1947. A unique atmosphere to experience in the heart of the Bayonne summer.
