As you continue your tour, let’s take a moment to talk about one of Le Mans’ greatest pleasures, its food. Here, they really know how to treat your taste buds! Let’s start with the undisputed star: rillettes du Mans. This famous shredded pork, slow-cooked for hours, melts in your mouth and is best enjoyed generously spread on warm bread to release all its flavours. Another savoury favourite is rillauds, chunks of pork belly confit, often served as an appetiser. If you’re after something heartier, don’t miss the local-style roast farm chicken or game dishes, both firmly rooted in Sarthe’s culinary tradition. When it comes to cheese, the region doesn’t disappoint. The most typical? Tomme sarthoise, a soft, creamy cow’s cheese sometimes flavoured with garlic or fresh herbs. You’ll also find excellent goat’s cheeses from farms around Le Mans, perfect for a quick snack on the go. And for dessert, it has to be sablés sarthois, delicious buttery biscuits with the perfect crunch. There are also old-fashioned flans, stuffed prunes, and pastries from local bakeries, like thick apple compote tarts or the soft, generous gâteau sarthois. To wash it all down, raise a glass of local wine. While Le Mans itself isn’t a wine-growing area, the nearby Coteaux du Loir produce excellent bottles, including Jasnières, a crisp, fruity white that pairs beautifully with rillettes or goat’s cheese. Whether you go for savoury, sweet, or a little of both, the cuisine of Le Mans is reason enough to stop and indulge during your visit.
