The church of Gesu

A contemplative stop on the Nice audio-guided tour, the pretty bluish church you see is the church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur, commonly called the church of Gesu. Its history begins with a wealthy Nicois merchant who made a large gift to the Jesuits to found a college.

The beginning of Nicois Baroque

The church was the chapel of this college. Built on the model of the church of the Gesu in Rome, it marks the beginning of Baroque art in Nice and inspired many later churches. The Baroque, marked by a profusion of gilding and decoration, responded to the Protestant movement of simplicity and sought, through the Counter-Reformation, to show the greatness of God.

What to see

The interior, of great richness, is worth a look: stucco, gilding and frescoes form an exuberant decor, typical of the Baroque. Enter this building with quiet and respect for the place of worship to appreciate its splendour.

Practical information
