Grande-Côte ascent

The Montée de la Grande-Côte, which links the lower slopes to the Croix Rousse plateau, is lined with typical buildings of this unique neighborhood. Some of these colorful houses date back to the 16th and 17th centuries, and add to the charm of this passage, which is the oldest on the hill. In fact, this was where the first "canuts" used to live, before the construction and development of the top of the hill to house the working class of the city. It was also used to demonstrate during the Canut uprising in 1831. A symbol of the Croix Rousse slopes, it is now a popular route for visitors to the plateau. Luckily for you, you are going in the right direction! All you have to do is go down slowly while enjoying the beautiful colors of the buildings! By the way, if you enjoy details, you may notice that the numbering of the houses is quite peculiar. It's done in the direction of the descent, whereas in most French streets number 1 is usually at the bottom!
